On Sunday 17th November Hertsmere Flyers Swimming Club hosted an ASA Development Meet at The Venue in Borehamwood. Being a development meet the gala is aimed at younger swimmers but with a varied mix of race distances giving these younger swimmers an opportunity to race competitively at middle distance level rather than just sprint races. The Club sent a mixed junior squad ranging in age from 9 – 11 years. As usual, there was another fantastic effort from everyone involved with swimmers from Hertsmere Flyers achieving 29 personal best swims, one gold medal and one bronze medal.

Whilst not as many medals as the previous week at Copthall with an older squad, this junior squad achieved more personal best times and three county times.

A super human effort from James Thornley saw him achieve three massive county qualifying times in 50M Backstroke, 50M Free and 200M Backstroke. James also raced the 100IM and came first in that and got a gold medal. Clearly the performance of the day.

Portia Nicholas-Jago got Hertsmere Flyers other medal, a bronze, in the 200M Butterfly. The photo below is Portia receiving her medal from the President of the ASA.

Special mentions must go to the following who all achieved massive Personal Best’s:

Leah Osher: 10.13 seconds off her 200 Backstroke time

Lilly Webber: 16.78 seconds off her 200 Backstroke time

James Warburton: 11.77 seconds off his 200 Breaststroke time

Tolu Elesin: 5.38 seconds off his 50M Freestyle time

Freya Bigland: 6.52 seconds off her 50M Backstroke time.

The Hertsmere Flyers Club Championships are on Saturday 30th November at 6.30pm at The Venue, Borehamwood. Members of the public are welcome to come along and watch a scintillating evening of competitive swimming with lots of trophies and awards up for grabs. In future galas it could be you swimming. Why not look to join Hertsmere Flyers now.
