Once a year at County level and once a year at Regional level a series of galas are swum to assess the progression of swimmers across County’s then the Region.
The system is set up to asess the swimmers against all strokes, across 4 or 5 categories of race length. Points are given for times achieved in each race and the top points in each category are added together to give the swimmer their total marks.
Girls are assessed from 11 to 13 years in single year age groups with boy’s 12 to 14 years in single age groups. The young swimmers only compete in 4 categories where as the older swimmers in 5. There is always entry time’s for each event which may vary from county to county or region to region.
The categories are:

100’s: 100m free, fly, breast or back crawl

To be in with a chance of being in the top 8 of the bagcats you need to bank one set of points in each of the categories above, this means it is advisable to have 2 swims in category to be safe. The other thing to remember is that entry for these galas are in January and when submitting your entry form you must declare where and when you achieved the time, so planning swims before Christmas to bank times is very important.
