In the county we enter the following two competitions.
The Hertfordshire County Development Meet
This is held in November each year. It is designed to give swimmers from around Hertfordshire aged between 9 and 11 an opportunity to prepare for the Hertfordshire County Championships. There are no minimum qualifying times but swimmers can only enter for events at which they have not previously swum in the County Championships. There are “no faster than” times which equate to the qualifying times for the County Championships; swimmers who have already recorded times faster than these cannot enter, whilst swimmers who achieve those times during the event do not receive a medal – their reward is to compete in the County Championships. in November annually details can be found here.
The Hertfordshire County Championships
The Hertfordshire County Championships have minimum age and time qualifications. They take place over two or three weekends in March and are the first formal rung on a ladder that runs through Regionals, Nationals and ultimately ends up at the World Championships and the Olympics. Counties have minimum entry times but no NFT times. With effect from the 2011 competition, qualifying times for all events other than the 400, 800 and 1500 free and the 400IM must be obtained at a licensed meet (levels 2 – 4). The younger swimmers compete in individual events and in a BAGCAT competition – BAGCATs is explained fully here. Details about Qualification times can be viewed here and past Championship results are available for 2013 and previous years.
Regionally we are affiliated to ASA East Region.
The ASA East Region runs Regional Swimming Championships at BAGCAT and Youth levels (Long Course), a Winter Swimming Championships (currently Short Course) and a Regional Inter-County Swimming event. In line with ASA guidance, the Youth Championships take place in May, the BAGCAT Championships take place in June and the Winter Championships take place in December. For each Championship, Qualifying Times are set which swimmers must reach to be able to swim in that event. These are based on a percentage of the National Qualifying Times, keeping in place the progression from County-Regional-National level competition.
Overall we take part in three different types of competitions.
1: Team Gala’s where the team is selected by the coaches and normally consists of 4 girls and 4 boys in each age group. Most galas have 4 age groups so the teams can be around 32 swimmers in total. The youngest swimmers in team galas are 8 years old generally. There are individual events and relays and there is one swim team per lane usually making up 8 teams in total for each round. We are currently taking part in two of the Hertfordshire Leagues. The peanuts League where we are currently in division 2 and the Major League where we are currently in division 1. These Team galas consist of three rounds please make yourself available for selection when details come out its a team effort wether you are selected for 1 race or 5. Further details of these leagues can be found by following the links below.
2: Open Meets where swimmers enter events that are on offer in the program in conjunction with advice from their coaches. Here you represent the club but as an individual. You must be a minimum of 9 years of age to enter meets and older in some cases. Swimmers are placed into heats based on their entry times regardless of age so you swim against othere swimmers of the same speed. Each meet may have a slightly different awards format and most meets also have whats known as upper and lower limit qualifying times. Meets start at Level 3 for developing swimmers and rise up to Level 1 for elite swimmers. Entry forms for meets usually come out months in advance and these competitions fill up quickly so its really important to get the dates in your diary and get the forms back to the club before the closing date.
3: Internal Competitons We have two types of these. The annual club championships which is open to every swimmer in the club regardless of age. This is an exciting event where you race against your fellow team mates. The other type is called Race Night and these take place during normal club sessions usually on a Thursday every 3 months. We use four lanes on the spectator side of the pool and simulate race conditions to help prepare our younger swimmers for open competiton and give them valuble race experience. We encourage every swimmer in the club to take part in these.
If you need any advice relating to these events please email our Competition Secretary Charlene Schindler from the Committee Contacts page.
