Development Meet Success and Club Records all round at Crawley

It was a busy weekend for many of the Club’s swimmers with both ends of the Club competing at different events.  The Hertfordshire ASA ran their annual Development Meet for under 12s at the Venue which gives young swimmers the opportunity to have a taste of open competition and the chance to gain county qualifying times.  Seventeen of our junior swimmers competed and swam an excellent 37 personal bests.  They won 7 medals between them and several secured county qualifying times.  Due to the threshold times of the meet those who swim a county time are deemed to have gone too fast for a medal.

Megan Davies had an excellent first open competition, achieving 3 county qualifying times (50 free, 200 free and 200 back), Ashley Randall swam 2 qualifying times (50 fly and 200 free) and Kimia Baradaran  (200 free), Isabella Mattey (200 breast) and Daniel Schindler (50 fly) all swam one apiece.  Maddie Simmons won a gold in the 50 fly, Ewan Brand took silver in the 50 free, as did Conor Browne in 50 back. Ashley Randall secured silver in the 200 IM and Miranda Willis also claimed silver in the 200 fly.  Kimia Baradaran took a bronze in the 200 IM along with Ashvin Kuri in the 200 back.

Kiran Basu, Lyla Basu, Harrison Broad, Lewis Forman, Benjamin Harris, Jason Lam and Jonathan Mackett all swam well, posting several PBs between them.  Congratulations to all these young swimmers and we look forward to seeing them compete more frequently for the Club in the coming months.

Meanwhile four of the Club’s senior swimmers travelled to the 50m pool at Crawley where they competed in an elite Level 1 competition. The qualifying times for this level of open meet are very high and they found themselves swimming in the company of several national swimmers and even an ex-Olympian (Katy Sexton)!  In spite of illness and injury, the 4 swimmers competed very well; they all confirmed or enhanced their county qualifying times and all broke Club records.  Adam Colyer continued his outstanding form to claim bronze in the 100 breaststroke.  He also amassed 4 regional qualifying times (RQTs) and broke 2 Junior Club records.  Boys’ captain, Christopher Cox, battled gamely with illness but managed to break 2 Junior Club records and gain one RQT.  Michael Fernandes broke his Club record in the 50 freestyle (and 15 year old Junior Club record) and secured 2 regional times.  Abigail Smith was the only female competitor and although she was carrying a shoulder injury, still managed to achieve a personal best in the 50 fly, breaking her own Junior Record again this year.  Well done to them all.
