The Best NetEnt Slots of 2017
NetEnt has firmly established itself as one of the most innovative and prolific software designers in the online casino industry. Its longstanding rivalry with MicroGaming reached a nadir last year when the latter blocked the release of NetEnt’s Phantom of the Opera slot on licensing grounds. It’s not quite The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones or Barcelona vs Real Madrid yet, but the whole affair neatly illustrated the fierce competition that exists in the market. Of course the best video slot is rather meaningless if its played at a dodgy casino and to help you we have also reviewed the best netent casino.
The game that caused the controversy was finally released a couple of weeks ago, repackaged under the snappy title of Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse. I’ve been busy playing it for the last couple of weeks, and it’s an interesting little game. But how does it compare to other NetEnt games? Well, given the huge number they’ve released over the last 12 months, there’s plenty to compare it against. So, I thought I’d pop my most critical hat on and decide which I think is best.
New NetEnt Games 2017
NetEnt have never had a busier year. Aside from some flagship launches, they’ve developed numerous exclusive slots for individual casinos or casino groups. Quantity hasn’t degraded quality, as you’d hope. There’s been the odd dud, such as Twin Spin Deluxe, which is a slightly lazy and ultimately disappointing sequel to the original Twin Spin game in my opinion. Mostly, the games have been excellent though. But two really caught the eye.
Planet of the Apes Slot
There are now thousands of slots on the market, so true differentiators aren’t easy to find. That doesn’t didn’t deter the NetEnt team when they secured the rights the blockbuster Planet of the Apes movie franchise. Clearly keen to take full advantage of the admittedly expensive license, they conceived an idea which nobody had ever seen before. The result was a game that became the most successful release of 2017.
NetEnt wanted to honour both the Rise and the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. However, rather than release a separate game for each of the films, they decided to create a game with two different game grids, each dedicated to one of the film. Each spin turns both sets of reels, and you can win on either side. They’ve interwoven elements of the bonus games too to increase the intrigue. The concept works remarkably well and in truth it’s an entirely obvious choice for this list. But facts are facts, and Planet of the Apes is one of the best online slots ever, not just 2017.
Finn and the Swirly Spin
Just when you thought Planet of the Apes marked the end of NetEnt’s rewriting of the rules in 2017, along came Finn and the Swirly Spin to prove you wrong. It’s another game with a unique set of mechanics, and it proved a big hit. Furthermore, it achieved its success despite much more limited fanfare in comparison to Planet of the Apes, which was hotly anticipated for months prior to its release.
It was the preview videos that ignited the imagination of slots fans and assured Finn and the Swirly Spin was hot property by the time it launched. It features a unique games grid that’s shaped like a swirl rather than the traditional parallel reels. The aim for the player is to move desirable symbols to the centre of the swirl and reap the rewards that follow. It’s a game that’s better experienced than explained but be warned – it’s addictive stuff. The Phoenician Casino is a decent place to play this online video slot
Emoji Planet Slot
I know that Planet of the Apes and Finn and the Swirly Spin were the two standout Netent releases for a lot of players in 2017. There’s likely to be more debate around my third pick though. There are plenty of other games that I enjoyed. Blood Suckers II was a worthy sequel to something of a cult classic, The Legend of Shangri La is the best of the Cluster Pays series in my opinion, while I spent months playing the fun and funky Scruffy Duck.
To round out my top 3 NetEnt games of 2017, however, I’ve plumped for Emoji Planet, a fairly niche release that’s born out of an obvious but ingenious concept. Emojis are basically slot symbols in waiting, and so it proved. Enlivened by a smattering of excellent bonus features including a cracking free spins round, it’s the cutest game since Energoonz. It’s easy to play for the beginner and deserves to be a big hit. Plus, whisper it quietly around MicroGaming quarters but Emoji Planet is better than there Emoticoins game, which was released around the same time. The rivalry continues at pace!
